Foreign language learning is a cornerstone of The International School program. Students learn to become functionally bilingual, as they begin to study German, French or Spanish next to English starting at the age of three. With a dual-language program from KG through Grade 4, children study at least two languages, one of which is English. Based on the acquired language skills students in Grades 5 through 8 receive instruction in at least three languages, English included. Language options vary by grade level, ability and previous experience or request.
Language Immersion Program - Kindergarten (age three and up)
TIS offers a Language Immersion Program in Spanish. Depending on applicant numbers TIS can also offer Language Immersion Programs in German and French. Many children entering TIS Kindergarten speak only English, while others are fluent in or have some knowledge of German, French or Spanish. Still others speak English and a second language. Kindergarten applicants who do not speak German, French or Spanish at home should have age-appropriate comprehension of and verbalization in English.
Dual-Language Program - Grades 1 and 4
TIS offers a Dual-Language Program in English/German, English/French or English/Spanish. Students spend half of their academic day being instructed in English and the other half being instructed in German, French or Spanish (at least 5 students/class). Parents of children applying to the Grade 1 English/German, English/French or English/Spanish program should note that applicants are not required to have prior knowledge of German, French or Spanish. In Grades 3 and above applicants would be expected to acquire grade-level reading and writing skills in the selected foreign language.
English as a Second Language
ESL support is available for students from other countries. However, because of the dual-language curriculum, students eligible for ESL must be enrolled in either German, French or Spanish programs.
From Grade 5 to 8 the foreign language program allows students to study a third language.
